Community Legal Services offers a wide range of options for volunteer opportunities as well as externships for course credit or service learning.
Each school sets its own requirements for externships (academic credit), usually requiring a minimum number of hours per semester. If you are interested, contact your school internship/externship or career services program to learn about their requirements for receiving academic credit including application deadlines, and required number of service hours before contacting us to arrange the opportunity that will best fit your needs.
Requirements for volunteering with CLS:
- A commitment to helping low-income persons;
- Excellent communication skills;
- An ability to work both independently and with a team;
- Respect for people of diverse cultures, communities, and backgrounds;
- Attention to detail;
- The ability to handle multiple tasks.

- Registering attendees using CLS iPads;
- Working with applicants to help them complete an application online; or
- Providing general information about CLS services.
Join our pro bono coordinators in welcoming clients to clinic, ensuring they are in the right place, and follow-up afterward with a survey. You can also support our volunteer lawyers during the clinic with client interviewing, completing legal advice checklists, and legal research. Our clinics offer volunteers impactful opportunities to serve our community with flexibility and time commitments that fit even the busiest of schedules.
Join our team of dedicated pro bono lawyers in serving the most vulnerable in our community! When you work with one our pro bono lawyers on a case, you have the opportunity to develop client interview, case management, and legal research and writing skills. You are able to directly apply your education in a practical learning environment with the mentorship of the pro bono lawyer handling the case.

Work with CLS legal staff on a myriad of legal research projects.
Law student volunteers write legal research memoranda, draft discovery requests and other legal pleadings, participate in client interviews, and review case law.
