Consumer Rights
A consumer is a person who purchases goods (such as groceries) or services (such as a hair cut), which may be sold by manufacturers, wholesalers, or retailers. Consumer law exists to protect people in everyday life. The laws are official rules and regulations to maintain an honest and legal way of doing business between buyers and sellers.
Both state and federal laws play a role in regulating consumer law. Some examples of these laws include prohibiting sellers from participating in false advertising, using product safety measures, overseeing debt collection procedures, and protecting consumers’ personal information. Consumers often find themselves needing legal help if they become a victim to an online scam, or purchase a product without being told of hidden defects, or lose money in crooked financial schemes such as identity theft or unauthorized credit card charges.
